The Regulatory Moment That Is Changing Everything

That year, the FDA placed 19 peptides — including BPC-157, GHK-Cu, TB-500, and a number of others — on its Category 2 Bulk Drug Substances list, effectively barring licensed compounding pharmacies from producing them. The agency cited safety concerns and insufficient human data. The practical effect was significant: a legal market that had been serving patients under physician supervision was suddenly shut down, pushing demand underground and into a grey market of unregulated online sellers, overseas manufacturers, and compounds of unknown purity.

The regulatory tide, however, is now shifting. On February 27, 2026, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that approximately 14 of the 19 restricted peptides would be returned to Category 1 status — meaning licensed compounding pharmacies could once again produce them legally under a physician's prescription. The announcement came after Kennedy publicly criticized the 2023 restrictions during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, arguing that the ban had simply driven consumers toward substandard illegal products rather than protecting them.
Following that announcement, the FDA confirmed that its Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee would meet on July 23 and 24, 2026, to formally evaluate whether BPC-157, KPV, TB-500, MOTs-C, and several other compounds should be added back to the 503A Bulk Drug Substances list. A second meeting is expected before the end of February 2027, at which GHK-Cu and additional compounds are expected to be reviewed. The official updated list has not yet been published by the FDA, but the direction of travel is clear.
